About Me

policies & procedures

Dear 6th Grade Families,

Welcome to the 6th grade at Wendell Middle School! My name is Emily Bishop and I am very excited about the upcoming 2018-2019 school year. This is my second year teaching at Wendell Middle and am so excited for another year with the Wolves.  I am a North Carolina native, originally from Randolph County, and a graduate of Campbell University.  I have a Bachelors of Science in Special Education and Elementary Education with a concentration in Language Arts. I am excited to be implementing engaging activities catering to your students needs and strengths. There are a few things that I wanted to go over with you before the school year begins so that you are aware of my classroom policies/procedures.

6th Grade Curriculum
In 6th grade  we follow the North Carolina Essential Standards.                   you can find  the K-12 standards, curriculum, and instruction Wake County follows in all core areas. Please let me know if you have any questions regarding the curriculum.

Classroom Behavior Expectations
The behavior expectations are the same across the board on our hall. Because of this, there are not many of them, but we expect all students to follow them in order for instructional time to run smoothly. Our 6th grade expectations are:
Be responsible for yourself and your actions
Be respectful of yourself, other classmates, and adults around you
Be prepared for class with all materials and ready to learn
Be accountable to yourself, your classmates and Mrs. Keith
Be on time for class and on task when class starts
Be a leader- Set an example for others.
Be Ready to EXCEL Every Day!

Engage: Meet and Greet at the door.
X-plore: Complete the warm-up, Good Things share out
Communicate: Affirmations and Teaching.
Empower: You show me what you’ve learned!
Launch: Review of the day and head on to next class period.

Homework
Sometimes homework will be given. It is expected that students will complete their homework when it is given so that they are prepared for class the following day.  Students will record their homework in their agendas daily and will be checked in class.

Grades
Assignments, quizzes, projects, and tests are a way for me, as a teacher, to measure student achievement. They help me to see whether or not a student is learning what they need to know. Students are expected to turn in ALL work on the due date. If you are struggling in class and need extra help, please let me know and we will make arrangements for extra help.

My grading percentage is as follows:
Formative Assessments (homework, exit tickets, etc)                     10%
Minor Assessments (Quizzes, classwork, etc)                                     35%
Major Assessments (Tests, Major Projects, Essays, etc.)                55%

Late Work, Make-Up Work, & Extra Help
You are expected to turn all work in on time. All missing assignments are due within 10 days of the assignment, and will not be accepted after that, unless the student is absent. There will be deductions for late work unless you were absent.

If an absence is approved in advance and/or if the work is assigned by the teacher in advance, all make up work, including tests assigned for the day of return, is due upon the student’s return to school.  If a student has an excused absence of one (1) to three (3) days the student will have one day for each day absent to make up the work.  For absences exceeding three (3) days the student will have two days for each day absent to make up work.

*Remember as a 6th grader, it is your responsibility to get all missing assignments and to turn the assignments in.  It is your responsibility to arrange a time to make up quizzes and/or tests.

*I am available on Tuesday afternoons from 3:15-4:15 for tutoring- If possible, please let me know within 24 hours if you plan to stay.

Communication
Please know that I firmly believe that we are partners, working together to ensure that your child has a successful year in my class. Please don’t ever hesitate to contact me if you have questions or concerns and know that I will do the same. Email is the easiest way to get a hold of me, as I check it several times throughout the day. Please keep in mind that I do have a family and often do not check email on the weekends. You can generally expect a response from me within 24 hours, unless I am absent from school.
You can use my class website as a resource to find your child’s weekly assignments, notes, important dates, useful links, etc. The website should be used only as a secondary resource. Students are expected to write down their homework in their agenda on a daily basis.
